Déjà Vu in the Finals
Spectators who showed up for the finals of the 2005 U.S. Amateur Championship had to do a double take when they saw who was left standing in both divisions of the highly competitive 3-day event.
In the finals of the Women’s Division, Karen Armstrong of Bear, Del., defeated Amy Poulter of Port St. .Lucie, Fla., 9-5 for the championship. The two squared-off earlier in the tournament with Armstrong winning the match.
In the finals of the Men’s Division, Pete Genovese of New Britain, Conn., defeated Scott Pardo of West Monroe, La., 11-5. Genovese was able to avenge a loss to Pardo earlier in the day that knocked him to the one-loss side of the bracket.
In 3rd Place in the Men’s Division was Tim Orange of Birmingham, Ala. Laura Poskus of Ocean City, Md., finished in 3rd Place in the Women’s Division. Finishing in 4th Place in the Men’s Division was Brian Parks of Bakersfield, Calif., with Henry Brodt of Glenview, Ill., and Jamey Gray of Jewett City, Conn., tied for 5th Place.
The top amateur players from around the country came to Mr. Cues II in Atlanta to compete for the coveted title of U.S. Amateur Champion and a ticket to the pro ranks.

Showdown of Lone Unbeatens
Only four players had yet to suffer a defeat as of Sunday afternoon. In the Women’s Division, those players were Amy Poulter of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Karen Armstrong of Bear, Delaware. |

Top Pro Player Makes Appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship
Men’s top pro player Johnny Archer stopped by Mr. Cues II Saturday evening to check out the action. U.S. Amateur Championship participants had the opportunity to get autographs and pictures with the billiard star. Archer may have been keeping his eye on the up-and-coming competition, as the winner of the Men’s Division will advance to the 2006 U.S. |

Champion Ousted
Reigning women’s U.S. Amateur Champion Phyllis Fernandez was ousted from the competition after enduring her second loss of the tournament. Fernandez was defeated 5-4 Saturday evening by Christine Honeman of Conifer, Colorado. Fernandez was vying to become only the third U.S. Amateur Champion (first women’s champion) to successfully defend her title. |
