Newcomers
Take Home Titles
So much for past
experience - two first-time competitors in the U.S. Amateur Championship
are taking home the titles. Phyllis Fernandez of Spokane , Wash. , defeated
Caryn Parent of Sanford, Maine in the finals 11-7 Sunday evening. In
the Men’s Division, David Hall of Scarborough, Maine defeated 2000 U.S.
Amateur Champion David Rowell of Birmingham, Ala. , in the finals 11-8.
Both champions will advance to a pro tournament next year.
In 3rd Place in
the Women’s Division was Shannon Condit, Runner-up in the last year’s
event. Finishing in 3rd Place in the Men’s Division was U.S. Amateur
Championship veteran Pete Genovese. In 4th Place in the Men’s Division
was Larry Kressel of Richmond, Va. Tying for 5th Place in the Men’s
Division were Ritchie Idrovo of Tinley Park, Ill., and Robert Hammack
of Shrewsbury, Mass.
