2003 U.S. Amateur Championship Onsite Coverage

The 2003 U.S. Amateur Championship has come to a close and this year’s champions are Bruce Choyce of Orlando, Fla., in the Mens Division and Tina Larsen of Palatine, Ill., in the Womens Division. Choyce defeated Pete Genovese of New Britain, Conn., 11-7 while Larsen defeated Shannon Condit of Columbus, Ohio 11-10 in the finals Sunday evening at Ultimate Billiards in Berlin, Conn.

The victory earned Choyce and Larsen a magnificent marble and bronze championship trophy, automatic entry into next year’s U.S. Amateur Championship and paid travel, lodging and entry into the a 2004 pro event. Both Genovese and Larsen finished as the Runners-up.

Finishing in 3rd Place in the Mens Division was Joe Cutler of Bay Shore, N.Y., and in 4th Place was Phil Stevens of Billerica, Mass. Rounding out the top 5 finishers was Matt Tetreault of Agawam, Mass., and Chris McDonald of Dacula, Ga. In the Womens Division, it was Leigh Brown of Clemson, S.C. finishing in 3rd Place.

The U.S. Amateur Championship is the only non-handicapped national tournament sanctioned by the APA and is open to both members and non-members alike. U.S. Amateur Championship participants compete in a double elimination race-to-7 with a maximum of five games of 8-Ball and eight of 9-Ball. Once the field is narrowed to two competitors, the final match becomes a single elimination race-to-11 with up to 13 games of 9-Ball and eight of 8-Ball.

Players advance to the U.S. Amateur Championship by qualifying in one of 16 Preliminary Rounds at regional sites throughout the country. Preliminary rounds were conducted in mid-Sept.

Finals of the Womens Division Set

The finals of the Womens Division are set and squaring-off will be Shannon Condit of Columbus, Ohio and Tina Larsen of Palantine, Ill. Condit defeated Leigh Brown of Clemson, S.C., to advance to the final round matchup with Larsen.

Condit dominated the 8-Ball set taking a 4-1 lead as the players switched to 9-Ball. Brown refused to go quietly, winning three of the first four games in the 9-Ball set. Condit rebounded to win the next to games of 9-Ball and the match 7-4, earning her a spot in the finals.

 
Lone Undefeateds Go Head-to-Head

The only remaining undefeated players in this year’s U.S. Amateur Championship squared-off Sunday afternoon with the winner advancing to the finals and the loser being sent to the one-loss side of the bracket. Brown Faces Condit in Semi-finals of Womens Division

Shannon Condit of Columbus, Ohio defeated Jackie Blomlie of Ocala, Fla., 7-5 to advance to the semi-final round of the inaugural U.S. Amateur Championship – Womens Division. Condit will face Leigh Brown of Clemson, S.C., with the winner advancing to the finals to face Tina Larsen of Palatine, Ill. Larsen defeated Brown earlier in the day on Sunday earning a spot in the final round. The winner of the Womens Division advances to a 2004 WPBA pro event.

 

Tetreault Avenges Early Loss

Tammy KroopWomens Division “Officially” Gets Underway

The inaugural U.S. Amateur Womens Championship began this afternoon at Ultimate Billiards. The first official victory in the history of the Womens Division was recorded by Tammy Kroop of Austin, Texas. Kroop defeated Betty Sessions of Norcross, Ga., 7-5 in a tight match. Sixteen of the nation’s top female amateur players are competing for a spot in a 2004 WPBA Classic Tour event.
