John Shattell said the U.S. Amateur isn't as pressure-packed as the others because, "teammates are not relying on your game and money is not at stake. I don't have to answer to anyone but myself."
Following an impressive 7th Place finish that featured a pair of 7-2 victories that knocked defending Runner-Up Dan LaVoie and last year's 3rd Place finisher, Andrew Barlow, out of
contention, Shattell solidified his position as a definite contender for future Championships. Ironically, he barely made it through the Preliminary Rounds.
"I sure didn't expect to play this well, so it will be a major boost for my confidence," he said. "This field is better than ever and I enjoyed myself more this year, which probably has
something to do with having won some matches." You think? Shattell admitted he didn't think that he would make it this far. Over the past three years, he
participated and qualified in 1997 but didn't place in the top 16. " I come out here not just for the competition but the chance to play in Las Vegas and be a part of the APA action. Now I'm
pretty worn out from the pressure, but I'll go home and prepare to do it all again next year." |
