and pool enthusiast who loves to take on the American game during the U.S. Amateur each year. Based on his '99 performance, we'll all being seeing more of Szafransky.
"These tournaments are a lot of fun," he said. "You take a look around and see all these strong shooters and know you're some place special. The field gets tougher every year, so that makes
any small successes big ones in my book."  Szafransky missed the inaugural
tournament in 1994 but has qualified each year ever since. For him it's refreshing not to have to play for money when an option like this Championship is available, which allows him to ultimately challenge himself
and do it with some good friends.
Szafransky, a skill level 7 in the APA Pool League, finished 49th in 1998. His wife Kim joined him at the Championship this weekend. |
