Some players come into the U.S. Amateur Championship Preliminary Rounds not knowing what to expect. Having played in them, as well as the Championship, last year, Chandler Drake knew what he
was getting into. That's one of the reasons the Savannah, Ga. sharpshooter set his sights high and had nothing to lose.
"I figured that getting into the Top 10 would qualify (the
Championship experience) as a success," said Drake, who surprised a few folks with an impressive 5th Place finish and placing 33rd in '98. "The competition is just as
tough as it gets, and I learned you really better play your best to win at all."
Local measuring sticks are easy to come by. But, as
Drake expressed, the opportunity to compete with players from all across the nation is an experience in itself.
"It's nice to come out and play people you don't know instead of shooting (against) the same people every
week. Everybody here," he said, "was real nice and courteous. It was a gentleman's tournament – but they do play to win."
